The Importance of Sharing the Work of Caregiving

5/4/2017

Across the US, it is estimated that there are nearly 34 million Americans providing unpaid care to older adults age 50 years and above. Caregivers put in nearly 20 hours of work a week on top of their regular jobs. Burnout and exhaustion are realities among caregivers who cannot cope with the rigorous demands of caring for a loved one or family member with disabilities.

Caregiving entails many tasks requiring the person to use both physical and mental capabilities. Meal preparation, personal hygiene & sanitation, cleaning, administrative work, medication assistance and shopping are some of the duties of a caregiver. Emotional support and listening to the elderly are also part of their tasks. To ensure that caregivers remain effective in helping the elderly, sharing the work of caregiving is essential; it is not possible to do everything without suffering from physical exhaustion and mental fatigue. Tasks can be shared among other family members or outsourced to professional health workers to reduce the burden on the primary caregivers. Here is an article that explains how to improve the lives of caregivers.
